Quarterly Hedge Fund Review, 4Q 2011

The second half of 2011 characterized by macro-fears and surging volatility, concluded with many hedge funds posting negative returns for the calendar year. Interestingly, equity hedge strategies, which saw the largest outflows in Q4 2011, remain the top hedge fund strategy allocated by institutional investors.

One noticeable change, however, has been a shift in the primary investment objective of hedge fund investors from correlation/diversification-related to absolute returns focused. That said, of the HFRI strategy benchmarks, Relative Value (I.E. arbitrage) was the top performer with a 2011 return of 0.50%.
